Rules of Conduct
Along the Silk Road is devoted solely to the pursuit of knowledge and deeper understanding. We do not publish articles with politically or ideologically moralizing agendas. We seek to understand — not to take sides.
Writing Guidelines
Topic:
This can be anything—political history, cultural studies, art, literature, linguistics, you name it! Please get in touch with us before you begin, and check our database to ensure the topic has not already been covered.
Length:
Between 1,000 and 3,000 words (for longer or shorter features, please contact us).
Style:
Use an accessible register aimed at a broad audience.
Academic requirements:
Articles should be academically researched and accompanied by a clear bibliography and footnotes.
Referencing style:
You may choose your preferred referencing style, as long as you apply it consistently.
Images:
Include one to five images that are either in the public domain or free of copyright restrictions.
Caption guidelines:
Image captions should follow the same principle: the description of the image in italics. Source: in bold. Indicate “Public domain” or other copyright information in normal font.
Quotes and passages from texts in other languages:
If your article contains quotations or passages in other languages, we encourage you to include the original text in transliteration (and in the original script if possible) before providing the translation. This is not mandatory, but you must always reference the translator in a footnote.
Central sentences:
Highlight two to three sentences that are central to understanding the text. These will also be highlighted in the published article (cf. our other articles to see how).
Submission format:
Please submit your draft as a Word document (not as a PDF).
File formatting details:
Font: Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1.5.
Review and editing process:
All submissions are subject to editorial review. Authors may be asked to revise their draft before publication.
First-time contributors:
We encourage you to add a short autobiography at the end of your article, introducing yourself, explaining your interest in the subject, and outlining any research focus you may have.
Recurring contributors:
Regular contributors may become eligible for inclusion in our editorial board.
